On the eve of the International Volunteer Day at OJSC “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” the conclusions of the work which had been done by the staff of the enterprise in 2009 were made.

Starting in November last year the volunteers’ movement obtained mass character at the Ukrainian enterprise and its program is taking shape in different directions. Among them – donation, multisided aid to municipal hospitals and children’s educational institutions, target campaigns of books, toys, clothes collection for children from orphanages and boarding schools, participation of the enterprise’s volunteers in improving parkland areas and streets of Krivoy Rog.

“Nothing is more important than the interconnection between people which we are creating listening to our hearts while doing our volunteer deeds. This work comes far beyond the borders of our enterprise. Our target is to facilitate such interconnection, including unique opportunities of the volunteers’ movement. I thank all employees of the enterprise who are acting very actively in the name of good, supporting those who really need their aid, giving not only their own time but a portion of their souls, creativity and own gifts”, noticed Jean Jouet, CEO OJSC “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog”, Chairman of Volunteer Committee of the enterprise during the meeting.

Personal volunteer activities of Jean Jouet and also his great contribution in development of the movement were granted with acknowledgement of Krivoy Rog Mayor’s Office. The most active volunteers – representatives of different shops and Veterans Organization of the enterprise were awarded with “Certificate of Acknowledgement” of OJSC “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” and a special insignia on the meeting. A symbolic message of which, a message to create good is the sign itself in the shape of a heart consisting of a number of palms put together.

Obtaining the awards the leader of the sports volunteer movement, deputy chairman of the sports club “Bogatyr”, Viktor Knyazev noticed, “We want to give the sense and public importance to the movement. The best sportsmen of the enterprise, as volunteers, conduct trainings in volleyball, mini-football and darts in several city’s children’s institutions every day. These activities are not of one-time character, children can rely on us. And most of children, when grown up, I am sure, will be volunteers too”.

The potential of the volunteers’ movement in the staff of OJSC “ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog” was noted by the representative of the Corporation Management, HR Executive Vice-President of ArcelorMittal, Bernard Fontana. Taking the floor at the feast he said, “Employees of the enterprise including the young people are different not only in the professional qualification level but also in their own wish to help the people surrounding us, with their natural gifts to promote transformation of tomorrow. I wish you all to realize these beautiful charitable targets and further to improve the volunteer movement”.

Main documents on Krivoy Rog history dated back to 1734-1761 burnt in 1941: the car with the documents was bombed near Nikopol. Academician Vasily Zuyev who visited this place in 1781, suggested that the name of the town could mean “crooked cape” after twisting river-bed of the Saksagan where it flows into the river Ingulets.
In 1881 iron ore began be mined and the town grew economically as well as its population. In 1919 Krivoy Rog became a part of Yekaterinoslavskaya gubernia. During Civil War it was one of the centers of anarchist movement headed by Nestor Makhno.
During World War II the city was occupied by German troops (on August 15th, 1941-1944) and considerably destroyed. After the war Krivoy Rog was rebuilt partly by captive Germans and turned into an industrial center of the oblast.
The area's industrial growth began in the 1880s, when European investment founded a mining syndicate. The metallurgical works in the city, Kryvorizhstal, in particular, expanded through Soviet times, and now remain some of the largest in the world.
During the Russian Civil War, the city and its hinterland were at the nucleus of Nestor Makhno's anarchist insurgency.
During World War II, Kryvyi Rih was almost totally destroyed by the fleeing Red Army. After the war people lived among the ruins while housing stocks were rebuilt. The housing shortage was met by innovative technological solutions, which meant temporary barracks and houses could be built quickly. The two kinds of cheap new materials were used later for years afterwards.
